Confessions of a Mallorca Foodie

Posted by August 13, 2018TravelMallorca

Dotted all over the Balearic’s jewel, Mallorca, there are a host of beautiful places to dine with new-wave chefs preparing local cuisine in some exceptional locations, Mallorca has become one of Europe’s most exciting foodie destinations.

“The number of amazing eateries here in Mallorca now is really exciting – the island has become a total foodie’s hub” says Kay Perry, 18-year island resident, who has not only witnessed the growth of Mallorca’s foodie scene first hand, but is our very own EC Villas’ girl-on-the-ground in Mallorca, A die-hard patriot of her adopted island, she’s been working in Mallorca as a vacation consultant for 17 years.

Kay has tried 100s of restaurants over the years, so she knows her stuff when it comes to what’s-hot and what’s-not on the Mallorca food scene. Here’s her top picks for summer 2018…

Fera Palma

One of our top picks has got to be @ferapalma housed in a beautifully restored old town palace steeped in history only a minute away from the lively shopping mile of Jaime III in Palma’s city centre.

Entering through the glass doors you are greeted with several imposing works of art, followed by a friendly welcome.

The food here is at Michelin star level; quite simply amazing. The five course tasting menu is reasonably priced and worth every penny, and there’s a very good selection of wine to accompany the delicious plates.

Ponderosa Beach

Eating with your feet in the sand has to be most people’s idea of paradise. Everything about this restaurant ticks the box. The venue has been well designed, the food is delicious, the drinks excellent and the service is much better than most other beach clubs are known for.

The dishes are mostly based around seafood, as you’d expect at a beach restaurant, offering various paellas, fish and shellfish to choose from, however the Asian influence throughout the menu gives this place a welcome twist. The food is all locally sourced, well cooked and fairly priced – making Ponderosa Beach impossible to fault.

Soak up the atmosphere with the in-house DJ’s playing great summer-time beats, whilst you enjoy good food by the sea.

Argos Restaurant

Located in the La Goleta Hotel de Mar, is the exquisite Michelin star Argos restaurant. Here you can expect nothing less than a gastronomic experience to remember. The tasting menu is exceptional with every dish a taste sensation, from the artichoke three ways, to the spicy sausage ice-cream.

Each course consists of a variety of textures and flavours, complimenting each other very well. The incredible attention to detail and a unique mix of flavours, is what makes the restaurant quite an experience – which every foodie will surely love.

The restaurant itself is beautifully designed to a contemporary finish and the multi-lingual waiting staff really contribute to the experience with detailed and enthusiastic explanations of every dish, wine and cocktail.

Las Terrazas at Hotel Bendinat

Hotel Bendinat Terraza Restaurant

If waterfront dining is what you’re looking for, this very popular restaurant, part of Hotel Bendinat is located in a quiet residential area, on the cliffs overlooking the sea.

This is a beautiful spot overlooking the bay to while away a sunny afternoon, with a magical view of the sea and the multitude of yachts and sailing boats, or on a warm summers evening, where you can watch the sun setting over the glistening blue waters.

The food here put simply, is very, very good. There are Mallorcan specialities on offer, as well as more traditional Spanish and European dishes. EC recommends the turbot, which is particularly good, as is the lobster paella. If you’ve a sweet tooth, the white chocolate fondant is exceptional!

Tables on the edge of the restaurant are “front line” and definitely worth requesting, although second line tables are just as good and sometimes less windy.

Selecting just a handful of restaurants in one of Europe’s finest food destinations is a super tough choice and of course there are many more EC favourites on the list.
